Reflecting Fukushima Daiichi accident, MIT professors proposed OFNP that is robust against Tsunami, Loss of Power Accident and doesn't need urgent evacuation even if severe accident happens.
Development of Offshore Floating Nuclear Power Combining Operating Light Water Reactor and Large Floating Body
Tsunami hight is low at offshore location where water depth is deep enough. In addition, floating body is not fixed in sea ground and easily ride away big wave.
The biggest problem with nuclear reactors is that they continue to generate a huge amount of decay heat for a long time even after shut down. Sea water can be stable and unlimited heatsink.
OFNP is located far away from residential area (out of Urgent Protection action planning Zone) and no urgent evacuation is necessary.
This technology is used in Offshore Oil Drilling Rig
Floating body is tough since double-hull structure and torpedoes and suicide attacks are easily blocked by iron wired net set around OFNP
Recently, OFNP is attracting world-wide attention. IAEA held 1st Symposium on November 23rd, 2023.
